PBX System

Evolution Of The PBX System

The Private Branch Exchange or PBX system has been in use for many years dating back to a time when operators were required to connect callers to various extensions by manipulating a collection of lines between sockets on a switchboard. Although the general principle behind the operation of a PBX system has remained much the same, the technologies that power them and the capabilities of t systems have evolved almost beyond recognition, reducing operating costs and simplifying the operator’s task considerably in the process.

The term, PBX system, covers a range of devices with differing capabilities. It refers essentially to a business telephone system involving multiple lines that is able to connect both internally, between extensions, and to an external public telecoms network, selecting an available line either through a manual key system or, completely automatically, with the aid of a PABX (Private Automated Branch Exchange) installation. Around the nation, the PBX system serves the business world, streamlining the task of internal, national and international communications.

Today’s PBX system is by no means restricted to handling phone calls. The handling of Internal connections has certainly been simplified, first by replacing plug-in leads with a dialling facility and later, with simple compact switches but the most important evolution of the PBX system has been the additional communication tasks that it is now able to handle. Solid state systems, sometimes termed EPABX provide the ability to process digitized signals such as those involved in data transfer via the internet.

Other new communications technologies such as ISDN and VoIP may now be easily integrated into a modern PBX system and businesses that employ these more recent installations enjoy the benefits of vital new business tools such as the conference calling that serves to reduce both travel costs and loss of productivity during travelling. Where a PBX system connects to a VoIP network, the resulting savings in call charges can be substantial.
